Factual media operation Ten Alps has today launched The Detail – an investigative journalism portal for Northern Ireland that the firm hopes will showcase a new model for the provision of local news and current affairs reporting.

Ten Alps, which is headquartered in Cheshire, is running The Detail through its Belfast-based production outfit Below the Radar.

The DetailIssue 1The firm has received £790k in funding for the project through Atlantic Philanthropies (£640k) and Screen NI (the remaining £150k) – enough to bankroll the site for an initial two year period.

A team of five full-time journalists have been taken on to provide content that will aim to put “investigative journalism at the core of the news industry in Northern Ireland”, assisted by freelance producers, a sub-editor and cameraman.

Content will be loaded to the portal every Monday morning and updated through the course of the week.

Below the Radar notes in a mission statement that it has “no intention of diluting the increasingly difficult newspaper sector and will not be seeking to sell advertising.

“Instead we will aim to create an extra element in the journalistic make-up of Northern Ireland. We are seeking to build partnerships with newsrooms which will be able to access our material for their publications and broadcasts.”

The Detail will, it says, give its journalists back “a fundamental resource” that the evolving news landscape often robs the industry of: “time to follow the story.”
