Convenient web-based program is first step toward attaining designation as a NICHE hospital

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), announces the February 2011 Leadership Training Program (LTP). The LTP provides the means to train a team of staff and begin the process of becoming a leader in the care of older adults and a NICHE designated hospital. Registration information for the six-week, online February LTP is available at www.nicheprogram.org/join-leadership_training_program.

The LTP is a blended-learning approach where participants engage in a rigorous program delivered via a web-based platform and facilitated by the NICHE team. Offered several times a year, the program includes webinars, mentoring by NICHE faculty, on-demand access to tools, benchmarking, guides for implementation of the NICHE program and more. In all 71 hospitals and 237 individuals attended the first five sessions of the online LTP since its inception in September 2009.

NICHE recommends that three people responsible for steering of the NICHE initiative at the facility should attend the LTP session. This typically includes a nurse clinician leader, a clinical educator, and an administrator, manager or quality person.

Program cost is $4,950 per hospital, which covers the cost of the three initial participants and all program materials. Additional participants are $350 each. The Geriatric Institutional Profile (GIAP), an extensive web-based assessment of the hospital’s readiness to implement geriatric programs, is included in the program at no cost.

About NICHE

NICHE is a national organization designed to help hospitals improve the care of older adults. NICHE hospitals seek to create an environment where older adult patients receive care that results in better outcomes. This climate of success encourages patients and their families to seek NICHE designated hospitals for their medical needs. The NICHE Network now numbers nearly 300 hospitals throughout North America.

NICHE is a program of The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU College of Nursing funded in part with generous support from Atlantic Philanthropies and The John A. Hartford Foundation. For more information visit www.nicheprogram.org.
