On May 23, 2015 the Republic of Ireland made history by becoming the first country in the world to introduce marriage equality by popular vote. Charlie Bird, an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, traveled across the country to record the emotional and inspiring stories of over fifty people who were deeply affected by the referendum.

A Day in May: Real Lives, True Stories (Merrion Press) is a poignant record, accompanied by stunning portrait photography, of this transformative moment in Irish history.

“These stories collected by Charlie Bird, filled with bracing honesty and heart-breaking personal revelation, make clear that being gay in Ireland was perhaps a more essential aspect of Irish history and Irish reality than anyone was aware.”
Colm Tóibín
