Dr. Arash Alaei was released from prison in Iran last month after serving three years of his sentence. He arrived in the U.S. on October 22, when he was reunited with his brother Kamiar, also imprisoned but released in late 2010.

During the Alaei brothers’ imprisonment, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), under Susannah Sirkin’s leadership, spearheaded a three-year international campaign to help win their release.

“Knowing that PHR and its members were working on our behalf sustained us when all seemed lost,” said Dr. Kamiar Alaei. “PHR is the one organization that uses the expertise and voice of doctors such as Arash and me to help protect human rights around the world.”

The Alaei brothers were arrested in 2008 and wrongfully convicted in January 2009 on charges of communicating with an enemy government. The Iranian government used the doctors’ travel to international AIDS conferences and meetings with colleagues in the U.S. as the basis of the charges.

On October 22, 2011 the brothers were interviewed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN.
