A recent Op-Ed in the Des Moines Register explains how early investments in children, including providing all children with quality early childhood education, strengthens the economy. The author of the Op-Ed piece, Barbara Merrill, Executive Director of the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children, is not alone when she states “Focusing our efforts on early-childhood education at the grass-roots level, at the state level and on a national stage will ensure the strength of America today and in the future.” Her assertion is supported by leading economists such as Arthur Rolnick of the Minnesota Federal Reserve and James Heckman of the University of Chicago.
