Ageing in Bermuda, Meeting the Needs of Seniors

Fordham University, Ravazzin Center for Social Work Research in Aging

The Situation In Brief

Although small in population, Bermuda will experience a dramatic growth in its ageing population in coming years. According to the Bermuda Census Office, the number of Bermudians 65 and older will increase 130 per cent by 2025.

The country is presently ill-equipped to meet the demands of this rapidly growing older population. Existing services for older adults are widely acknowledged to be inadequate and need much improvement.

The cost of living is also prohibitive for many older adults. Bermuda’s success as an international business centre has resulted in a high cost of living unanticipated by many seniors and service providers. Many older adults are struggling financially and physically to remain as independent as possible and live at home.

Ageing Programme Goals

The goals of the Ageing Programme in Bermuda are as follows:

  • Increase access to information and services for older adults by improving outreach and information about available services and by addressing barriers that affect access to these services, such as transportation.
  • Increase the capacity of health and support services for older people by training and educating caregivers, health care professionals, social workers and others and by increasing the availability of information about priority diseases, such as dementia.
  • Develop Bermuda’s ageing field by supporting leadership-development programmes for ageing organisations, promoting best practises and encouraging collaboration among organisations working on behalf of older adults.
