Chief Investment Officer
Philip Coates was the Chief Investment Officer of The Atlantic Philanthropies from 2005 – July 2016.
Mr. Coates was responsible for overseeing investments during Atlantic’s final phase of grantmaking. The foundation is in the process of disbursing its remaining endowment, with plans to complete active grantmaking by 2016 and close its doors by 2020.
Mr. Coates managed investment strategies and worked with the CEO and Board’s Investment Committee in developing Atlantic’s Investment Policy. He was also responsible for its implementation, including the selection of investment managers. Mr. Coates has particular expertise in hedge fund investments, to which Atlantic has had a high allocation.
After joining the foundation as an Investment Analyst in 1998, he held increasingly important roles. Mr. Coates became an Investment Officer in 2000, the Deputy Chief Investment Officer in 2004, Chief Investment Officer in 2005.
Prior to Atlantic, Mr. Coates worked as an Analyst for Deutsche Bank for two years.
He is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the European Foundation Financial and Investment Officers Group (EFFIO), a network of the European Foundation Centre. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Initiative on Foundation and Endowment Asset Management at London Business School from 2007-2008.
Mr. Coates holds a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh and a Masters in Finance with distinction from London Business School.
