Strategic Evaluation Associate
Merrill Sovner was the Strategic Evaluations Associate at The Atlantic Philanthropies through 2016, helping to design, review and disseminate Atlantic’s evaluations related to policy advocacy and philanthropic practice during its final learning phase. She was based in New York.
Ms. Sovner joined Atlantic while pursuing her PhD in political science at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. Her research focuses on the role of civil society and philanthropy in democratization and the transmission of international norms.
Ms. Sovner previously worked at the Open Society Foundations for over a decade, serving as Deputy Director of the East East Beyond Borders Program and Program Officer in the Office of the President. Her work has included strategic development, program management and proposal review for grant portfolios and organizations representing the Americas, Central and Eastern Europe, China and Nepal, and on topics including transparency and accountability, international human rights law and civil society support. She is a member of the American Evaluation Association and the International Society for Third-Sector Research.
Ms. Sovner holds a BA in political science from the University of Michigan and an MSc in comparative politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
